In this 12-week course we will master the very important T’ai Chi move known as “Grasp the Sparrow’s Tail” through extensive practice and exploration.

Grasp The Sparrow’s Tail is such an important move because it is made up of 4 smaller movements that also represent 4 primary expressions of energy (or “jings”) in T’ai Chi. These are:

  • Ward Off (or “Peng”)
  • Roll Back (or “Lu”)
  • Press (or “Ji”)
  • Push (or “An”)

Much of what we learn, practice and discover in this move is applicable to all T’ai Chi moves. By mastering this one move, we are building a deeper understanding of all or our T’ai Chi practice.

Each class, we will explore a different concept or perspective of the move and learn variations to the move so that we can uncover the core elements. Some topics that are planned are:

  • Introduction to Peng and Lu
  • Introduction to Ji and An
  • Integrating the whole body into the movements
  • Importance of Rooting
  • Getting Creative with the Movements
  • Using Equipment (such as Stones, Poles, Pillows, Leaves, etc.)
  • Discovering The Jings in Nature and the World Around Us
  • Applying the Jings to Our Lives

It is also recommended that participants practice the move between classes for about 100 repetitions (between 10-20 minutes) day. This practice combined with in class practice will add up to about 10,000 repetitions of the move by the end of the course! If you have practiced this move that much with some level of intention, you will have truly gained mastery of Grasp the Sparrow’s Tail.

The course will begin on Tuesday June 8th at 2:30 and will run for 12 weeks through August 24th.
